Exercising Selflessness

Happy Tuesday to you!

We are thirteen days into 2015. Are you still working on your resolutions? How many anti-resolution people do you know? They seem to be everywhere this year: in the office, the local grocery store, the gym. Do they really affect your motivation to follow through with your plans? Personally, I pay them no attention. However, I have been thinking a great deal about vision boards, new year resolutions, and short/long term goal lists.

For the most part, our desires are for the benefit of self. "I want to lose 5 lbs." "I want to visit to South Africa." "I want to learn how to surf." Do we ever set goals with the intent of helping others? Of course, there is nothing wrong with traveling the world, learning new skills, or improving one's health. However, life is worthless if we only seek our best interests. Many of life's exciting moments involve a community (e.g. weddings, graduations, championship games, etc.). Could you imagine celebrating any achievements without the presence of your loved ones? I couldn't. Victory is even sweeter when I can share it with my family and friends.

This year, go beyond the mere inclusion of your loved ones in moments of celebration (or times of sorrow). Establish goals that benefit your family and friends. Create vision boards that improve and strengthen your workplace and neighborhood. Let your resolution in 2015 be to seek community advancements as you seek your own.
